Biblical Finances

NIV-Deuteronomy 8:18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,…
Far from being opposed to wealth, God is the one who gives His people the ability to earn and produce wealth that can then bless others around them. I came across this account:

William Colgate arrived in the United States from England as a youth. Colgate learned candlemaking in Baltimore and New York, then established (1806) a tallow factory, later engaging in soapmaking. In 1847 he moved his factory to Jersey City and by 1850 began producing fancy soaps and toilet preparations. Colgate was an active Christian layman who helped organize several Bible societies and contributed to several colleges.

Along with the blessing of wealth comes the responsibility to use it wisely and in accordance with Biblical guidelines. Begin by being faithful where you are, with little or much. How you handle your finances now is a reflection of how you would handle more later.

Worldview

Recently Bill Jones taught at FCC on the relationship between our worldview and spiritual warfare. Dr. Paul Hiebert writes:
The Bible is clear: there is a cosmic battle between God and Satan (Eph. 6:12). There is, however, no doubt about its outcome. God is Creator. All the rest is creation, dependent on God's ongoing creation for its ongoing existence. The very existence of Satan and sinners, and the power they use in their rebellion is given them by God, and is testimony to his mercy and love. If the cosmic struggle between God and Satan is not one of power, what is it about? It is the establishment of God's reign on earth as it is in heaven. At the cross Satan, not Jesus, stands judged because he put Christ, God incarnate as perfect human, to death (Col. 2:15). Christ's obedience unto death "rendered powerless him who had the power of death, that is the devil" (Heb. 2:14). The cross was not an end in itself. Rather it removes the obstacles to God's purpose of creating people fit for His Kingdom. The cross is the victory of righteousness over evil, of love over hate, of God's way over Satan's way. If our understanding of spiritual warfare does not see the cross as the final triumph, it is wrong.

Land to Grow - Dr. Randy Smith

Statistically, most churches in the USA are about our size, around 100 or less. It is a comfortable size where you can know many people and not feel lost, as it were. But it is even more alarming to read a study that revealed that out of America’s 400,000 or so churches, around 80% of them are in decline or have plateaued. We are part of this statistic. Without a dramatic turn-around, we and the other 80% of America’s churches, will not be reaching the lost in our communities.

There are over 200,000 people just in the cities in our area, and sometimes we speak of the ¼ million in the general metro area. If we took into account Elkhart, St. Joe, Cass, and Berrien counties, we are looking at 677,000 people, with a drive.

The Percept study of several years ago, found that 35%-37% of the people in our area have no faith involvement – they are unchurched. That represents thousands of people who need to be reached by someone for Jesus. Demographically, in our target locations, these are young families, and 29%-53% were between the ages of 0-17. In other words, there are many people needing the kind of ministries we can offer in the area we are considering for purchase.

To even consider buying land, however, means that we want to grow; that we are willing and wanting to have new people around; and that we are willing to give them opportunities for significant involvement, leadership spots, and freedom to be part of our new future.

Today I don’t see how we can afford everything that would need doing. But I have a vision and a conviction that if we have heard from God on this, that He will supply as needed. I know it will require sacrificial giving and serious change on our part, and we have to decide if we are up to the challenge. But I am also excited to write our own, my own, story of faith – about how God provided and accomplished what He had shown us by faith. -Pastor Randy

Kingdom Value: Sheltering Many

What do you suppose that handful of disciples thought when Jesus described the Kingdom as a tree designed for multitudes? I doubt they could get their heads around it. In fact, when things did start to grow in the Book of Acts, they found it difficult to believe that God would actually admit non-Jews into the Kingdom.

Friends, most of us are in the Kingdom already. But do we care about the majority who are still outside, some of whom are just looking for a place to perch from their busy fluttering around? Are we content to stop reaching people? Are we happy with our little flock? Or do we have a concern and passion for those who remain out from under the Kingdom’s shelter?

For me, we demonstrate our belief in this area by either making room for more people in an expanded facility, in multiple services, or in planting a new church in another location. We must actively be inviting the unchurched and unsaved, not only to our church, but into a relationship with Jesus.

And the second area I see us working this out is in an intentional investment in global missions. The Kingdom is bigger than any one church or any one nation. Even as we seek to expand our ministry locally, we need to actively facilitate the Kingdom’s expansion around the world as we are able. That will be demonstrated in financial giving, intentional praying, occasional visits to the field, and sending out our own missionaries from this church.
